WHAT IS SQUARE DANCING?
Square Dancing is a dance form carried out by 4 couples all forming the sides of a square and facing in. They execute movements to commands given by the "caller". These movements are predefined traffic patterns that are learned and the caller will string these together to form a flowing dance.
Dancers don;t memorise whole routines but they do need to know what the calls are.
Some examples are : "Allemande Left, Swing, Square Through, Pass the Ocean, Trade By".
Whilst it used to be associated with country or bluegrass music, the music used these days is very varied - pop, rock, big band, jazz, showtunes, disco, swing - even classical music (with a beat for dancing!).
WE RUN "LEARN TO DANCE " SESSIONS EACH YEAR
We are currently in the middle of a learners' class but are always keen to hear from anyone who is interested in learning.
Drop us line or call and we can let you know when the next intake is.
We invite anyone to come along and try square dancing with us. IT IS PROBABLY NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT!
The sessions are held Mondays at 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Find out how interesting and easy it is to learn modern square dancing. YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DANCE! 2 left feet is quite OK and if you can walk you can do this, no fancy footwork.
It really does provide mental and physical exercise and no "Yee Hahs" in sight. All sorts of music is used to suit all tastes.
Leave us your email address or other contact details on the CONTACT US page. We'll let you know when the next Come and Try sessions start.
All we ask is you TRY it. Bring friends and it's only for an hour and a half each week.
In the meantime if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email or phone us or use the CONTACT US form on this website (see menu above).
