And so the year is off to a flying start as we celebrate Australia Day on the public holiday Monday. As is our custom, we asked the local youth group, the Flagstaff Venturers, to supply and cook a BBQ tea for us. It helps us and they raise funds for their group as well.
Really nice to a see great crowd complete with Aussie colours of green and gold or flag colours.
The pavs for supper were just the icing on the cake (sorry!) and through the night we danced using some Australian music and songs.
Thanks to all who joined in and to our committee and helpers who helped us transform the hall.
Great to integrate our learners in the night with alternating brackets too – we all had a ball!
Pamela Thompson recieved her Gold Membership for 20 years with us. Shown here with Frank Packenham.
Graham and Dawn leading the charge in a Plus dance in the early part of the night.
Thelma McCue was there to cue some of the Rounds
Everything looks so – … Cabaret!
Lea and Anne Tulloch – Les cued some of the Rounds and gave us a call.
Sometimes, when things get a little busy, we have to bring the visiting local guest callers to the stage (that’s Les Tulloch being transported!)
Matthew being absorbed into the whole Cabaret thing!
Looking like Blues Brothers rejects – Matt and Graham
Helen and Graeme received life memberships for 10 years with us and ably dissected the Birthday cake.
Great to see Ray Sedgeman and Maya Cremers from Victoria drop in and celebrate with us – looking sharp too!
The night started with a sessioin that alternated Plus and Rounds.
Life is a Cabaret – oh – chum! Matthew doing his thing from a great looking stage set.

It was a very special night as we celebrated the Club’s 27th Birthday. The theme was “Cabaret” and the hall looked oh so classy! Lights, props and costumes!! Great turnout and a lot of people took to the theme either in Cabaret style or red and black colour schemes. Combine that with good music and a supper fit to feed any Cabaret army and you have a wonderful night.
Matthew Mills from Bundaberg in Queensland was our feature caller. He did a really nice job and really entered into the theme with his music and style.
During the night we presented 10 year membership awards to Helen Hahn and Graeme Zilm and a 20 year (gold) membership to Pamela Thompson. Others receiving the awards who couldn’t make it were Brian Gill (10 years) and Sid and Pauline Dowden (20 years).
One highlight of the night was a moment on stage when young Emily Reid, daughter of Clare and James Reid (now in Qld) delivered a speech on behalf of Mum and Dad who couldn’t be there. Dressed in her cabaret outfit she had the crowd transfixed – beautiful!
Thanks also to Jeff Seidel & Les Tulloch for their calling and Les and Thelma McCue for the cueing – all added to a memorable evening.
Here’s a couple of videos of Matt in action on the night… (To see full screen. click on the [ ] in the bottom right hand corner of the active video window.
As August comes around we once again indulge the inner desires of our gastonomic needs and put on our annual Pancake night.
The “Pancake King” was again summoned to perform his unique craft and entertain the masses. With the smell of cooking crepes and shrieks of success as our dancers successfully caught the tossed delights hot off the hotplate, it was a fun atmosphere. Take a look at the video to see it all in action.

At the 2011 National in Darwin our club members combined with Wild Frontier and Kanella Squares to present one of the Dressed Sets representing South Australia. A sharp looking bunch I must say! (Thanks to Roger Marchant for the photo).
On the second night back for 2011 we celebrated Australia Day with our traditional BBQ and dance. Our thanks to the Flagstaff Venturers who supplied the meats and cooked the BBQ for us – great job as always.
The crowd looked great in Green and Gold and an assortment of other Australian colours or costumes. A few Aussie songs were thrown in the mix and Graham, dusting off the didgeridoo, rendered his version of Way Out West complete with a didge lesson for us all.
We were thrilled to welcome Lara-Mareike Jung from Germany who is travelling the world and had some time to drop in and say Guten Tag – G’day!
Thanks to all who came along and entered the spirit and to the helpers who set up the hall and cleared away.
A fantastic night of fun, food and great people! We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a spud feast to start the night. Our spud caterers did a great job in feeding the five thousand (well it seemed like it!).
Most dressed in green and with Irish music between brackets and jigs for Round Ups it all added to a great atmosphere. Thanks to our committee and helpers who came in early to decorate the hall and clean up afterwards. It was all grand – indeed it was.
Our theme this year had a different decade for each bracket. Great to see so many dress to the theme with a wide variety of costumes. I’m not sure where the hillbillies came from though! A great atmosphere and fantastic support from all clubs. Thanks to Les Tulloch, Jeff Seidel, Thelma McCue for help on the program and a special guest appearance by “retired” James Reid.
A lot of help from the committee and other helpers made the hall and supper something to remember. Why I’m sure even our life sized Elvis was all shook up! Take a look at some of the photos of our caller Graham and the night of fun. Thanks to Roger M for most of these. (Click to enlarge picture)
We started in the 1920s
Then we marched into the 1940s
We rocked into the 1950s
We felt the love in the 1960s
We put on our Boogie Shoes for the 1970s
Life memberships were bestowed
The stage looked great with lighting and characters
The floor was alive with atmosphere
Cousin Roger (our photographer) and his ..er…cousin?
Well it was certainly an Aussie summer night as we gathered around for our BBQ and dance. A 37 degC day but fortunately our hall airconditioning works well.
It was a great crowd and all heartily got stuck into their tucker at their tables. A big thanks to the Flagstaff Venturers who again cooked for us and used this as a fundraiser.
The hall looked great and thanks to the committee who tethered up all the Aussie animals and hung our flags. Nice to see the green and gold colour schemes and Aussie theme in your outfits too.
Back in January we received a visit from a German couple, Michael and Karin Steinhorst from Berlin. It was indeed good timing as they arrived for our annual “Aussie Night” and got a real taste of an Aussie BBQ, Aussie music and Aussie hospitality. Michael calls for the Berlin Square Ups club and entertained us with his calling at out MS club.
Arriving on the weekend prior to the dance gave us a chance to show them around our state a little with a trip to Victor Harbor.
