2011 September 24th – 26th Birthday

Here’s a quick video snippet:

We celebrated our 26th Birthday with a Black and White Ball and what a night it was! Nearly everyone frocked up – men with dinner suits that seemed to be working a little hard to close up and girls with their best evening gowns. Great to have visitors from the Acey Squares in Naracoorte and Ray Sedgeman from Victoria and big thanks to Les Tulloch, Milton Mackenzie and Jeff Seidel for joing in on the program. Also a thanks to Thelma McCue and Les for the Rounds. The supper was nothing short of sensational and I nearly got killed in the crush!

The stage looked dazzling with our silhouettes and dancing lights and a big thanks to the crew who helped us set up and pack away.

2011 January 24th – Aussie Night

On the second night back for 2011 we celebrated Australia Day with our traditional BBQ and dance. Our thanks to the Flagstaff Venturers who supplied the meats and cooked the BBQ for us – great job as always.

The crowd looked great in Green and Gold and an assortment of other Australian colours or costumes. A few Aussie songs were thrown in the mix and Graham, dusting off the didgeridoo, rendered his version of Way Out West complete with a didge lesson for us all.

We were thrilled to welcome Lara-Mareike Jung from Germany who is travelling the world and had some time to drop in and say Guten Tag – G’day!

Thanks to all who came along and entered the spirit and to the helpers who set up the hall and cleared away.

2010 Oct 25th – Halloween Dance

Our annual Spooks Ball was a fun night. People really dressed the part and entered into the “spirit” of it all. Supper was anything but dull with some very creative, dare I say worrying, food on offer. Many Halloween songs and some creepy sound effects during the breaks. Great job by the committee and helpers in setting up the hall – particularly while the learners were underway.

We welcomed Alan and Jane Evans from Qld who were over for Kanella’s Plus Birthday and we enjoyed a bracket of Alan’s calling.

2010 September 25 – Adelaide Outlaws 25th Birthday

We were thrilled to have a great crowd join us for our Silver anniversary dance. Thanks to you all for coming and thanks to our helpers who set up the hall and ran the catering.

We were presented with the Square Dance Society plaque to commemorate 25 years (thanks Don and Jan). Eddie Lee, our president, made a very nice presentation to Graham in the form of a hand made Silver Microphone Award. This echoes the formal badge award from the Australian Callers Federation and the Quarter Century Club Award from Callerlab in the USA. (Special thanks to Aubrey Barrot for the carving and handywork in making this). Graham finsished off this sectionwith a tribute to Dawn – the heart and soul of our club.

Great to have fellow callers Les Tulloch, Jeff Seidel and Trevor Hunt on the program and also Thelma McCue for the Rounds. Also nice to see Ray and Maya from Victoria.

Here’s to many more years!!

2010 July 30th – Silver Jubilee Weekend with Jerry Jestin

On the weekend of July 30 – Aug 1st, we were proud to present US caller Jerry Jestin for our celebration of 25 years of the Adelaide Outlaws clubs.

The hall looked fantastic with silver adornments and dancing coloured lights on stage. The committee and helpers did a great job with catering and above all, the atmosphere was electric. Many SA and visiting dancers enjoyed three sessions of Mainstream, Plus and Round dancing. Jerry and Janice Jestin made themselves at home and Jerry provided a great program with his variety of choreography and music.  Jerry has a great personality which comes through in his calling and we enjoyed his cueing as well. Again a nice variety of routines and music.

We hope all who came enjoyed the festival and thanks for helping us celebrate our Silver Jubilee. We sent Jerry and Janice off to Buderim in Queensland for their 25 year celebration of the Sunshine Coast Square Dance centre. The Jestins then jet on to Melbourne then Perth for weekends in those cities.

Thanks Jerry and Janice, thanks dancers and we’re looking forward to our Birthday celebration on September 25th.

2010 May 24th – Japanese Visitors

(Click on thumbnails to see full pictures)

We were thrilled to welcome a lovely couple from Nagoya in Japan – Kiichi and Ryoko Hayashi. They joined us at the Plus and Mainstream clubs and endeared themselves to everyone. We took the opportunity to show them around some of our native fauna on a weekend with a visit to Cleland National Park. We followed that with a dinner at Ned Kelly’s Retreat restaurant. For some reason, Ryoko was quite reluctant to eat something she had only just patted earlier in the day! Steaks were a must though and a welcome change from the fish and rice dishes they are used to. They had a wonderful time and were very charming. When we found out Kiichi also called, Graham put him on stage and he delivered a stirring hoedown. It’s always a great reminder of how universal square dancing is and borders just disappear. We wish them well on their remaining travels around Australia.

2010 May 10th – Adelaide Idol Mothers Day Chocoholics

What an entertaining night it was! Eight brave souls put some time and all their inhibitions aside to perform for us on this Mother’s Day Adelaide Idol night. From singers to dancers and poets they gave us their best between brackets. Why even young Barry Kemp gave us a call.

Thankyou so much to our performers. You were great!

We also welcomed four visitors from WA and Doona from Victoria. It was a full on night topped off with the chocolate themed supper. A big thanks to those volunteers who helped set up the hall for us too!

2010 February 15th: St Valentine’s Charity Night

As is our custom, our Valentine night was also a fund raiser. This year the vote was for the Beyond Blue initiative – an organisation that assists people with depression. The door takings, raffle and sale of pre-loved square dance clothing raised just over $1,000 for this organisation. The hall looked beautiful with the hearts and cupids. Thanks to all who joined us and dressed to match in the red, whites and pinks. It was a great atmosphere and of course set to music with the “love” theme – romantic and raunchy!

We had the pleasure of welcoming square dancers from Leipzig in Germany – Dietmar, Birgit and their daughter Silvia. Whilst mum and dad spoke only broken English, Silvia acted as interpreter and was amazed by this wonderful thing called square dancing. A wonderful family – so friendly and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We love the fact that this is an international dance form!
